In 2020, Oughtibridge was selected as part of the ‘New Sculpture in Yorkshire’ initiative, a collaboration with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park supporting new permanent sculpture commissions. From almost 200 submissions, seven artists were commissioned to realise projects for a significant North Yorkshire collection.

For the project, Oughtibridge developed several proposals exploring scale, materiality and form. While initially working with tall monolithic ceramic structures and later considering bronze as a medium, the shortlisted concept centred on two complementary rounded ceramic sculptures. Following a visit to the proposed site, discussions with the clients and the architectural setting further informed the final direction of the work.

Rather than relying on sketches, Oughtibridge developed a series of sculptural maquettes to communicate the ideas physically. Beginning with solid “egg-like” forms, he carved lines, scoops and contours directly into clay to establish the final composition and surface language. These maquettes evolved into medium-scale versions that allowed the clients to experience how the sculptures would function when enlarged, while preserving the texture, proportion and flowing forms central to his practice.
